Part 1: An Overview of Lens Materials

Are you familiar with the different materials used to make prescription lenses? Perhaps you've experienced cheap plastic lenses that were thick, heavy, and didn't help you see better. In this article, we will explain how to choose the best lenses for your eyes. Read on...

THE BAD

Glass: Oldest material used to make spectacles since the 13th century. Excellent optical clarity, however, an extremely heavy lens type which is prone to easy breakage. No longer commonly used due to hazardous risk for shattering in the eyes.

CR39 Plastic: The cheapest lens material which first became available around the 1940s. Unfortunately, this lens type is much thicker and heavier than other modern lens materials (albeit, lighter than glass).

Polycarbonate: Another inexpensive material originally developed for bulletproof windows and Air Force visors. Lightweight and impact resistant properties made this an attractive lens type, however, it offers the worst clarity of all eyeglass lens types.

THE GOOD

Trivex: Developed as a high quality alternative to polycarbonate, used in helicopter and fighter jet windshields. Offers excellent clarity and the lightest weight of all lens types while maintaining its impact resistance.

High Index (1.60, 1.67, 1.74): For higher prescriptions, a thin lens is ideal. High Index can be cut thinner and lighter than most conventional lens materials. Requires additional treatment to maintain optimum clarity. Fortunately, we include the best lens coatings on all our lenses at no extra charge!
